How to Prepare for the Kansas Master Mechanical (ICC KGL, 2018 IFGC/IMC) Exam

Start with the books. This is an open-book exam, so the references on the bulletin's list are your main study tool. Get the editions the bulletin names.

Learn where things are. Read the table of contents and the index of each book until you know where every major subject lives. On test day, finding an answer fast matters more than memorizing it.

Highlight the sections you use most. Check the bulletin's rules on tabs and markings before you add any.

Spend most of your time on the biggest topics. Administration General Regulations and Appliances & Mechanical Equipment make up 57% of the exam.

Take timed practice exams. The clock trains you to find answers at the pace the real exam needs: about 2 minutes 24 seconds per question.

Aim to pass more than once. One passing score can be luck. Several in a row means you're ready.

Where to get them:

On Test Day

  • Go through the whole exam first. Answer every question you know and bookmark the ones you don't. Every exam lets you come back to bookmarked questions, but some lock the questions you've seen once you take a break, so work your bookmarks before any break.
  • Then go back to your bookmarks and work them out.
  • Don't let one question eat your time. You have 4 hours for 100 questions, which is about 2 minutes 24 seconds per question.
  • Before you finish, answer anything you skipped. A blank can't earn a point.

Study Tips

Our practice exam is specifically designed to mimic the testing conditions at all exam centers. While untimed PDF study guides might help with studying, they don’t prepare you for the challenge of managing your time during an actual test.

Know your way around each book's index and table of contents. Open-book exams reward speed: you need to find specific items quickly.

On an open-book exam, work through every question once: answer the ones you know and skip the ones you don't. Then go back to the ones you flagged. You can bookmark questions for later review, just like on our exams — and don't sink too much time into any single question. The clock is still running.

Don't let the clock rattle you. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when facing a page full of questions, a racing mind, and a ticking clock. Stay calm and stick to your planned pace. If you've been monitoring your progress consistently, you'll have enough time to finish. Even if the final minutes feel rushed, as long as you have only as many questions remaining as you should at that point, you're exactly where you need to be.

This practice exam mirrors the real Pearson VUE exam — the same number of questions, drawn from the same topics. Practicing in that format now means no surprises when you sit for the real thing.

Sample Kansas Master Mechanical (ICC KGL, 2018 IFGC/IMC) Practice Questions

These questions come from our practice question bank, each with its answer and reference.

Sample 1 — Exhaust and Ventilation Systems

  • A. 300 cfm per lamp
  • B. 100 cfm per lamp
  • C. 200 cfm per lamp
  • D. 500 cfm per lamp

Correct Answer: A

IMC 2018 Section 502.11.2 requires not less than 300 cfm per lamp for xenon projectors (200 cfm per lamp for electric arc projectors), and the xenon exhaust rate must keep the exterior temperature of the lamp housing from exceeding 130°F.

Sample 2 — Chimneys and Vents

Question: You are a journeyman plumber replacing a gas water heater in a building that has a chimney previously used for venting a wood stove. Before connecting the new water heater's vent connector, what must you verify regarding the cleanout?

  • A. That the cleanout is permanently sealed with morite cement
  • B. That the cleanout remains tightly closed when not in use, and repair or replace it if it does not
  • C. That the cleanout is removed entirely and the opening is bricked over
  • D. That a new cleanout is installed at least 12 inches below the lowest chimney inlet

Correct Answer: B

Sample 3 — Combustion Air

Question: You are a journeyman plumber installing a gas furnace in a utility closet that receives all combustion air through ducts from the outdoors. The ducts terminate in the closet. According to code, which of the following requirements applies to horizontal upper combustion air ducts?

  • B. They must be insulated where passing through unconditioned spaces

  • D. They must slope downward toward the source of combustion air

Per IFGC Section 304.11, Item 6, horizontal upper combustion air ducts shall not slope downward toward the source of combustion air. This prevents condensation or other issues from flowing back toward the air source and ensures proper air delivery.

Sample 4 — Fuel Supply Systems

Question: What is the minimum test pressure required for a gas piping system, regardless of design pressure?

  • A. 10 psig
  • B. 1½ psig
  • C. 5 psig

Reference: IFGC 2018 Section 406.4.1
