3 questions

Sample 1 — Types of Roofing Material and Application

Question: You are replacing the membrane on an existing low-slope roof that is framed at one-eighth unit vertical in 12 units horizontal but that drains positively with no ponding. How does the minimum design slope of one-quarter unit vertical in 12 units horizontal apply to this reroofing work?

  • A. Overflow scuppers must be added to the existing parapet
  • B. The roof deck must be re-framed to the minimum slope
  • C. The minimum design slope requirement need not be met
  • D. Tapered insulation must be added to reach the minimum slope

Correct Answer: C

IRC 2015 Section R908.1, Exception 1, states that reroofing is not required to meet the minimum design slope requirement of one-quarter unit vertical in 12 units horizontal for roofs that provide positive roof drainage. Exception 2 likewise does not require secondary (emergency overflow) drains or scuppers to be added to such existing roofs.

Sample 2 — Fasteners, Flashings, Drainage, and Scuppers

Question: A cricket or saddle must be installed on the ridge side of a chimney or other roof penetration that exceeds what width, measured perpendicular to the slope?

  • A. 48 inches
  • B. 30 inches
  • C. 24 inches
  • D. 36 inches

Correct Answer: B

IBC 2015 Section 1503.6 requires a cricket or saddle on the ridge side of any chimney or penetration greater than 30 inches (762 mm) wide measured perpendicular to the slope. The covering must be sheet metal or the same material as the roof covering; properly flashed unit skylights are excepted.

Sample 3 — Administration and General Requirements

Question: While your crew is reroofing a commercial building, the building official determines that the work conflicts with the provisions of the code and serves a written notice and order on the person responsible for the work. What is that order required to direct?

  • A. Surrender of the permit to the department
  • B. Immediate vacating of the occupied structure
  • C. Submittal of revised construction documents for review
  • D. Discontinuance and abatement of the illegal condition

Correct Answer: D

IBC 2015, Section 114.2 states that the building official is authorized to serve a notice of violation or order on the person responsible for the work, and that such order shall direct the discontinuance of the illegal action or condition and the abatement of the violation. Removal or termination of unlawful occupancy comes later through legal proceedings under Section 114.3, and permit suspension or revocation is a separate authority under Section 105.6.
