Sample 1 — Types of Roofing Material and Application
Question: Fasteners used to attach clay and concrete roof tile must be corrosion resistant and comply with which minimum shank gage and head size?
- A. 12 gage with a 3/8-inch head
- B. 11 gage with a 3/8-inch head
- C. 11 gage with a 5/16-inch head
- D. 12 gage with a 5/16-inch head
Correct Answer: C
IBC 2018 Section 1507.3.6 requires tile fasteners to be corrosion resistant and not less than 11 gage with a 5/16-inch head, long enough to penetrate the deck 3/4 inch or through the deck thickness, whichever is less. The 12-gage, 3/8-inch-head fastener is the asphalt shingle nail of Section 1507.2.5.

Sample 2 — Fasteners, Flashings, Drainage, and Scuppers
Question: You are detailing the cap flashing where a slate roof meets a brick chimney. The detail requires not fewer than two plies of felt, with a strip of felt set in plastic cement extending 1 inch above the first felt. What is the required width of that felt strip?
- A. 6 inches
- B. 12 inches
- C. 8 inches
- D. 4 inches
Correct Answer: D
Per IBC 2018 Section 1507.7.7, chimneys, stucco or brick walls shall have not fewer than two plies of felt for cap flashing consisting of a 4-inch-wide strip of felt set in plastic cement extending 1 inch above the first felt, topped with plastic cement; the felt shall extend over the base flashing 2 inches.

Sample 3 — Administration and General Requirements
Question: A dwelling you are reroofing sits just inland of a large bay, in flat unobstructed terrain exposed to wind flowing over open water. For buildings exposed to wind coming from over that unobstructed area, how far downwind from the edge of the unobstructed area does Exposure D extend?
- A. 1,500 feet or 10 times the building height, whichever is greater
- B. 5,000 feet or 20 times the building height, whichever is less
- C. 600 feet or 20 times the building height, whichever is greater
- D. 600 feet or 10 times the building height, whichever is less
Correct Answer: C
IRC R301.2.1.4, Item 3 provides that Exposure D extends downwind from the edge of the unobstructed area a distance of 600 feet or 20 times the height of the building or structure, whichever is greater. The 5,000-foot figure in the same item is the minimum length of the unobstructed water or flat area itself, not the downwind extent.
