Types of Roofing Material and Application 14 items

Our study plan for this topic: Asphalt shingles: slope, underlayment, fastening and application; Wood shingles: slope, exposure, spacing and application; Wood shakes: slope, interlayment, exposure and application; Slate shingles: slope, headlap and application; Clay and concrete tile: slope, underlayment, attachment; Metal roof shingles and metal roof panels: slope and attachment; Material standards and labeling for steep-slope coverings.

3 questions

Sample 1 — Fasteners, Flashings, Scuppers, Etc.

Question: Wood shingles are being installed on a dwelling whose roof sheathing is 3/8 inch thick. What is the minimum fastening required?

  • A. Three fasteners per shingle, extending through the sheathing
  • B. Two fasteners per shingle, penetrating 1/2 inch into the sheathing
  • C. Two fasteners per shingle, extending through the sheathing
  • D. One fastener per shingle, penetrating 3/4 inch into the sheathing

Correct Answer: C

IBC 1507.8.6 requires each wood shingle to be attached with not fewer than two fasteners, with a minimum penetration of 3/4 inch into the sheathing; where the sheathing is less than 1/2 inch thick, the fasteners must extend through the sheathing. With 3/8-inch sheathing, two fasteners extending through the sheathing are required.

Sample 2 — Re-roofing

Question: You are performing a full roof replacement on an existing commercial building, which requires removal of the existing layers of roof covering down to the roof deck. Which existing component is permitted to remain in place on the deck and be covered by a new layer of the same material?

  • A. Self-adhered valley underlayment
  • B. Mechanically attached base sheet
  • C. Adhered ice barrier membrane
  • D. Fully adhered rigid insulation

Correct Answer: C

Per the exception to IBC Section 1511.3, where the existing roof assembly includes an ice barrier membrane that is adhered to the roof deck, that existing ice barrier membrane is permitted to remain in place and be covered with an additional layer of ice barrier membrane in accordance with Section 1507. No similar allowance exists for base sheets, insulation or other underlayments — those must come off with the rest of the assembly down to the deck.

Sample 3 — Types of Roofing Material and Application

Question: Asphalt shingles must be tested for wind resistance and their packaging labeled to show the resulting classification. Which test standard is the primary required method for determining asphalt shingle wind resistance?

  • A. ASTM D7158
  • B. ASTM D4869
  • C. ASTM D1970
  • D. ASTM D3462

Correct Answer: A

IBC 1504.1.1 requires asphalt shingles to be tested in accordance with ASTM D7158 and to meet the classification requirements of Table 1504.1.1, with packaging labeled accordingly. Shingles not within the scope of D7158 are tested to ASTM D3161 (exception). ASTM D3462 is the shingle material standard (1507.2.4), D4869 is an underlayment standard, and D1970 is self-adhering polymer modified bitumen.
