Sample 1 — Wiring Methods and Materials
Question: What conductor sizes are permitted for Type UF cable?
- A. 14 AWG copper or 12 AWG aluminum through 4/0 AWG
- B. 14 AWG copper or 14 AWG aluminum through 250 kcmil
- C. 18 AWG copper or 16 AWG aluminum through 2 AWG
- D. 12 AWG copper or 10 AWG aluminum through 2/0 AWG
Correct Answer: A
Per NEC 340.104, the conductors of Type UF cable shall be sizes 14 AWG copper or 12 AWG aluminum or copper-clad aluminum through 4/0 AWG.
Reference: NEC 2020 Section 340.104
Sample 2 — Services and Service Equipment
Question: A 400 A service uses 600 kcmil copper service conductors. What is the minimum size of a copper grounding electrode conductor that runs only to a concrete-encased electrode?
- A. 2 AWG
- B. 4 AWG
- C. 3/0 AWG
- D. 1/0 AWG
Correct Answer: B
Table 250.66 would require a 1/0 AWG copper grounding electrode conductor for 600 kcmil copper service conductors, but 250.66(B) says a grounding electrode conductor (or bonding jumper) that runs only to a concrete-encased electrode is not required to be larger than 4 AWG copper. So the minimum size required here is 4 AWG copper.
Reference: NEC 2020 Section 250.66(B), Table 250.66
Sample 3 — Branch Circuits and Conductors
Question: Enclosures for overcurrent devices shall be mounted in what position?
- A. A horizontal position only
- B. A vertical position
- C. Any position approved by the manufacturer
- D. At a 45-degree angle or greater
Correct Answer: B
Per NEC 240.33, enclosures for overcurrent devices shall be mounted in a vertical position. Circuit breaker enclosures are permitted to be installed horizontally where the circuit breaker is installed in accordance with 240.81.
