Sample 1 — General Requirements
Question: As the master overseeing commissioning of a self-service LP-gas motor vehicle fuel-dispensing system (card lock type), you must verify the placement of the required emergency shutoff switch. Where must that switch be located relative to the dispensers?
- A. Within 100 feet, but not less than 25 feet
- B. Within 100 feet, but not less than 20 feet
- C. Within 75 feet, but not less than 20 feet
- D. Within 75 feet, but not less than 25 feet
Correct Answer: B
Per IFGC 2018 Section 412.9, Item 2, a self-service LP-gas dispensing system shall be provided with an emergency shutoff switch located within 100 feet (30 480 mm) of, but not less than 20 feet (6096 mm) from, the dispensers. The 75-foot/25-foot combination is the requirement for the emergency shutdown device at CNG motor fuel-dispensing facilities (Section 413.8) and is a common point of confusion.

Sample 2 — Appliances and Equipment
Question: What minimum clearance is required at the sides and bottom of a suspended-type unit heater to combustible materials when the unit has an internal draft hood?
- A. 12 inches at the sides, 6 inches at the bottom, and 1 inch above
- B. 18 inches at the sides, 12 inches at the bottom, and 6 inches above
- C. 6 inches at the sides, 12 inches at the bottom, and 18 inches above
- D. 24 inches at the sides, 18 inches at the bottom, and 12 inches above
Correct Answer: B
Per IFGC Section 620.4, suspended-type unit heaters shall be installed with clearances to combustible materials of not less than 18 inches at the sides, 12 inches at the bottom, and 6 inches above the top where the unit heater has an internal draft hood.

Sample 3 — Combustion Air
Question: When using the Longest Length Method to size a residential gas piping system, what single measurement is used to determine the pipe size for EVERY section of the system?
- A. The length of each individual branch segment being sized
- B. The total combined length of all pipe segments in the system
- C. The length from the regulator to the nearest connected appliance
- D. The length from the point of delivery to the most remote outlet
Correct Answer: D
Per IFGC Appendix A, Section A.3.1, Step (4): 'Determine the length of piping from the point of delivery to the most remote outlet in the building/piping system.' Step (5) then states: 'This is the only length used in determining the size of any section of gas piping.' This single longest length is applied to every segment in the system, making the method conservative.
