Our study plan for this topic: Definitions of plumbing fixtures, fittings, and appurtenances; Minimum number of required plumbing fixtures by occupancy type; Fixture installation requirements (clearances, spacing, and setting); Prohibited fixtures and connections; Fixture material and quality standards; Faucets, fixture fittings, and shower valve requirements; Flushing devices for water closets and urinals; Individual fixture requirements (bathtubs, showers, water closets, urinals, sinks, bidets, and specialty fixtures).

Plumbing Fundamentals 10 items

Our study plan for this topic: Code scope, intent, and applicability (IPC Chapter 1); Permit requirements, application, issuance, expiration, and exempt work; Code official authority, duties, inspections, and right of entry; Violations, stop work orders, penalties, and unsafe plumbing abatement; Board of appeals process and qualifications; Required plumbing system tests (water, air, smoke, gravity sewer, forced sewer, shower liner); Protection of pipes from corrosion, freezing, physical damage, and structural members; Pipe support intervals, hangers, anchorage, and sway bracing by material type.

Traps, Cleanouts and Interceptors 3 items

Our study plan for this topic: Fixture trap requirements and prohibited trap types; Trap seal depth requirements and seal protection methods; Cleanout placement intervals and location requirements; Cleanout sizing, access clearance, and plug specifications; Grease interceptor requirements, sizing, and capacity; Oil separators and sand interceptors for commercial applications; Venting, access, and maintenance of interceptors and separators; Specialty interceptors for clothes washers, bottling plants, and slaughterhouses.

Special Requirements 2 items

Our study plan for this topic: Nonpotable water storage tank requirements (location, access, venting, overflow, testing); On-site nonpotable water reuse systems (permitted/prohibited sources, collection piping, disinfection, valves); Nonpotable rainwater collection and conveyance systems (collection surface, roof washer, debris excluders, filtration); Reclaimed water system design and distribution piping requirements; Subsurface landscape irrigation system design, sizing, and installation (percolation tests, seepage trenches, absorption area); Indirect waste piping requirements (air gap, air break, waste receptors, food-handling equipment); Special wastes — neutralization and treatment of corrosive wastes.

Drainage Requirements 10 items

Our study plan for this topic: Sanitary drainage pipe materials and applicable standards (above-ground, underground, and building sewer); Slope and installation requirements for horizontal drainage piping; Drainage fixture unit values and system sizing tables; Cleanout placement, sizing, access, and clearance requirements; Joints and connections for sanitary drainage piping by material type; Sumps, sewage ejectors, and below-grade subdrain pumping systems; Storm drainage system sizing using rainfall rates, roof drain flow rates, and conductor/leader tables; Secondary (emergency) roof drains, scuppers, and backwater valve requirements.

Vent Requirements 10 items

Our study plan for this topic: Trap seal protection and maximum allowable pressure differential; Vent terminal location and height requirements (roof, wall, and proximity to openings); Frost closure and cold-climate vent sizing requirements; Vent pipe sizing using developed length and drainage fixture units (Table 906.1); Maximum distance of fixture trap from vent (Table 909.1); Venting methods: individual, common, wet, circuit, combination waste-and-vent, and waste stack vent; Air admittance valve installation, location, size, and prohibited applications; Relief vent requirements for stacks exceeding 10 branch intervals and circuit-vented branches.

Water Distribution 8 items

Our study plan for this topic: Water service pipe sizing and separation requirements; Pipe and fitting materials for water service and distribution (approved standards); Fixture supply pipe sizing and minimum flow rates/pressures at outlets; Maximum flow rates and water consumption limits for fixtures and fittings; Backflow prevention devices and cross-connection control; Pressure regulation, water hammer arrestors, and booster systems; Valve placement requirements (full-open and shutoff valves); Water heater safety devices, relief valves, and discharge piping requirements.

Plan Reading 10 items

Our study plan for this topic: Interpreting drainage fixture unit (DFU) values and pipe sizing tables for sanitary drainage systems; Reading water distribution system design criteria tables (flow rates, pressures, and fixture supply pipe sizes); Identifying pipe slope requirements for horizontal drainage piping from plan specifications; Locating and interpreting cleanout placement requirements on drainage plan drawings; Reading vent pipe sizing tables (stack vents, vent stacks, and individual vents) from developed length and fixture unit data; Identifying required valve locations (full-open and shutoff) on water distribution system plans; Interpreting building drain and sewer sizing tables based on slope and fixture unit load; Reading trap-to-vent distance requirements and vent connection configurations from plan layouts.

Gas 14 items

Our study plan for this topic: Gas piping sizing using tables and equations (longest length, branch length, and hybrid pressure methods); Piping materials, fittings, and joining methods (metallic pipe, copper tubing, CSST, polyethylene plastic); Piping installation requirements (prohibited locations, burial depth, underground protection, support, and identification); Pressure testing, inspection, and purging of gas piping systems; Shutoff valves and flow controls (appliance shutoff valves, pressure regulators, excess flow valves); Appliance connections and connector requirements (flexible connectors, maximum length, prohibited locations); Combustion air requirements (indoor air, outdoor air openings, mechanical air supply methods); Venting of gas appliances (vent types, vent connector sizing, chimney requirements, vent termination locations).

3 questions

Sample 1 — Gas

Question: A supply air duct is connected to a listed gas-fired central heating furnace. For what distance from the supply plenum must that duct maintain the same minimum clearance to combustibles as is required for the plenum?

  • A. 6 feet
  • B. 1 foot
  • C. 3 feet
  • D. 2 feet

Correct Answer: C

IFGC 2015, Sections 308.3.4 and 308.4.5 require supply air ducts connecting to listed central heating furnaces to have the same minimum clearance to combustibles as required for the supply plenum for a distance of not less than 3 feet (914 mm); clearance is not required beyond that distance.

Sample 2 — Plumbing Fundamentals

Question: You are ready to test a roughed-in drainage and vent system piped entirely in PVC. Which test is permitted for this system?

  • A. Smoke test at a 1-inch water column before fixtures are set
  • B. Air test at 50 psi held for 15 minutes
  • C. Air test at 5 psi held for 15 minutes
  • D. Water test with a 10-foot head held for 15 minutes

Correct Answer: D

IPC 2015 Section 312.3 states that plastic piping shall not be tested using air; the 5 psi air test applies only to nonplastic piping. Section 312.2 requires the water test on the drainage and vent system with no section tested at less than a 10-foot head of water, held for not less than 15 minutes. The 50 psi air test belongs to the water supply system test (Section 312.5), and the smoke test is part of the final test after traps are filled (Section 312.4).

Sample 3 — Drainage Requirements

Question: A warehouse has a vertical wall above the roof line that diverts rainwater onto the roof surface. When sizing the roof drains, conductors, leaders and horizontal storm drainage piping, what portion of that vertical wall area must be added to the projected roof area?

  • A. One-third of the wall area
  • B. The entire wall area
  • C. One-half of the wall area
  • D. One-fourth of the wall area

Correct Answer: C

IPC 2015, Section 1106.4 (Vertical Walls) requires that one-half of the area of any vertical wall that diverts rainwater to the roof be added to the projected roof area when calculating the required size of vertical conductors, leaders and horizontal storm drainage piping.
