The Louisiana Roofing, Sheet Metal and Siding licensing exam is 50 questions. You have 120 minutes to complete it. Passing score is 70% — that means you need at least 35 correct answers.

What You'll Be Tested On
The exam covers six topic areas. Here's what each one actually requires.
Estimating and Plan Reading — 5 questions
These questions make you do math. You'll calculate sloped roof area from plan dimensions using slope factors, convert flat area to actual surface area, and run quantity takeoffs for specific materials — shingles, tile, slate, metal panels, and roll roofing. Expect problems that require you to account for lap and overcut allowances when estimating underlayment. You'll also see labor cost questions: calculating production rates for a given crew size, then adjusting published labor unit prices to match actual crew wages. Work these without shortcuts — a single wrong step cascades through the whole answer. Reference tools include Roofing Construction & Estimating, Chapter 1, which covers slope factors and area equations directly.
Surface Preparation and Planning — 5 questions
Before any material goes on a roof, the deck has to be right. Questions here cover deck inspection procedures and what qualifies as an acceptable substrate. You need to know specific plywood and OSB requirements — thickness, span rating, and grading standards as covered in Roofing Construction and Estimating, Chapter 2. Know drainage design requirements and minimum slope thresholds for different roof types. Underlayment selection depends on both slope and the finish material being installed — a question might give you a slope and a material and ask which underlayment configuration is required. Know the distinction between underlayment types covered in Underlayment on Sloping Roofs, Chapter 3.
Steep and Low Slope Roofing including BUR and Waterproofing — 18 questions
This is the heaviest section — more than a third of your exam. Study it accordingly.
For steep slope: know asphalt shingle types, grades, installation requirements, fastening patterns, and starter course rules. Know the correct underlayment configuration for each slope condition. Clay, concrete, and slate tile questions cover profiles, installation methods, and material standards — including ASTM C1167 and ASTM C1492 requirements cited in the NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep Slope Roof Systems. Wood shake and shingle questions require knowledge of grades, acceptable deck types, and installation specifics from Wood Shingles and Shakes, Chapter 6.
For low slope: built-up roofing (BUR) questions cover bitumen types, ply counts, and aggregate surfacing. Polymer-modified bitumen, EPDM, and thermoplastic membrane (PVC, TPO) questions draw from NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems, Chapters 5 and 10. Know attachment methods — fully adhered, mechanically attached, and ballasted — and the conditions that determine which is used.
Roofing Components — 10 questions
This section tests materials knowledge at the component level. Know UL fire and wind ratings for asphalt shingles, including ASTM D3161 classification. Know drip edge and valley flashing installation requirements. For wood shingles and shakes, know grade designations and the physical differences between them. For clay and concrete tile, know profile types — flat, low-profile, barrel, interlocking — and what distinguishes each. Slate tile questions require knowledge of physical properties and grading. IBC Section 1505.3 and IBC Section 1507.2.2 cover fire and installation requirements you should have memorized.
Safety — 5 questions
OSHA rules, not general common sense. Know the specific fall protection requirements for both low-slope roofs (6-foot trigger) and steep-slope roofs. Know the components of a personal fall arrest system and their specifications. Guardrail height, load requirements, and construction standards are testable details. Scaffold platform construction, load capacity, and fall protection are covered in OSHA 1926 CFR 29. Ladder safety requirements are also in scope. Know fire prevention requirements under OSHA 1926.150(c)(1)(i) and OSHA 1926.150(e)(1) and (e)(2).
Repairs and Reroofing — 7 questions
Know the difference between re-covering and tear-off replacement — the IRC and IBC treat them differently for layer limits and fire classification. You'll need to know how to evaluate an existing roof: interior inspection, deck underside, perimeter assessment, and rooftop inspection. Moisture detection methods include core cuts, infrared thermography, and nondestructive testing — know how each works and when each is used. Re-covering eligibility varies by material type: what can be overlaid and what must come off first. Flashing treatment during reroofing — when to replace versus reuse base flashings, counterflashings, and penetration flashings — is tested here too.
Worked Sample Questions
Question 1
Materials require 1 pallet per 16 squares. The job is 64 squares. How many pallets are needed?

Correct Answer: D
64 ÷ 16 = 4. Clean division, no rounding required. On multi-step estimating problems, always complete the arithmetic before checking the answer choices — distractor answers are placed at exactly the wrong stopping points.
Question 2
A flat roof has 300 ft of parapet walls. Cap flashing comes in 12 ft sections. Add 10% waste and 1 extra piece for field cuts. How many total sections?

Correct Answer: D
Step 1: Apply the waste factor — 300 × 1.10 = 330 ft.
Step 2: Divide by section length — 330 ÷ 12 = 27.5, round up to 28 sections.
Step 3: Add the 1 extra piece for field cuts — 28 + 1 = 29.
Miss step 3 and you land on 28, which is a distractor. The exam frequently builds multi-step problems where each wrong stopping point matches one of the answer choices.
Question 3
A re-roof requires removal of 2 layers of asphalt shingles and 1 layer of wood shakes. Roof area is 3,600 sq ft. Asphalt weighs 200 lbs per square per layer. Shakes weigh 300 lbs per square. Dumpsters hold 4 tons each. How many dumpsters should be ordered?

Correct Answer: A
3,600 sq ft = 36 squares.
Asphalt: 2 layers × 200 lbs × 36 squares = 14,400 lbs.
Shakes: 300 lbs × 36 squares = 10,800 lbs.
Total: 25,200 lbs ÷ 8,000 lbs per dumpster (4 tons × 2,000) = 3.15 → round up to 4 dumpsters.
Always round up on disposal calculations. Ordering 3 dumpsters for 3.15 loads of debris means you're short on job day.
How to Read Your Score
The passing score is 70% — 35 out of 50 questions on the real exam.
Your first practice attempt is a diagnostic. It tells you where your gaps are, not whether you'll pass. If you score in the high 70s or above on your first try, you have a solid foundation. If you score in the 60s — right around the passing line — that's not a green light. Scoring near 70% on practice usually means you're one bad topic away from failing the real thing.
Use the topic-by-topic breakdown after each attempt. If you're dropping points on Steep and Low Slope Roofing, that's your priority — it's 18 of 50 questions. Missing half of those alone puts passing out of reach. If Safety or Estimating is the weak spot, those are five questions each — still enough to swing a borderline score.
Take the full practice exam more than once. Because it draws from 433+ questions, each attempt surfaces different material. A single attempt won't show you everything the question bank covers.
Where Candidates Lose Points
Unit errors on math problems. The Estimating section uses squares, square feet, bundles, pallets, and linear feet — sometimes in the same problem. Converting 3,600 sq ft to 36 squares and forgetting that step costs you the answer.
Stopping one step too early. Cap flashing, dumpster, and underlayment problems all have built-in traps where rounding up or adding a final allowance is the last step. Most wrong answers correspond to a real intermediate result.
Mixing up re-cover and replacement rules. The Repairs and Reroofing section tests specific eligibility criteria by material type. Candidates who treat these as interchangeable lose points fast.
Confusing slope thresholds. Underlayment requirements and minimum slope rules differ by material — asphalt shingles, tile, and membrane systems all have different cut-off points. Know the numbers, not just the concept.
Running short on time in the heavy section. Steep and Low Slope Roofing is 18 questions. Candidates who over-invest time on early sections sometimes rush through it. Budget roughly 2 minutes per question and keep moving.
Guessing on OSHA specifics. Safety questions test specific requirements — guardrail heights, arrest system specifications, scaffold load ratings. General job site awareness won't carry you here.
