Sample 1 — Gas Detection & Testing
Question: A gas piping system with a design operating gas pressure of 2 psig or less is purged with fuel gas and the point of discharge is monitored with a listed combustible gas detector. Under this purging procedure, purging shall be stopped when:
- A. 10 percent fuel gas by volume is detected
- B. Fuel gas is detected
- C. 90 percent fuel gas by volume is detected
- D. 50 percent of the lower explosive limit is reached
Correct Answer: B
Per NYC Fuel Gas Code Section 406.7.2.1, Item 4, where a low-pressure system is purged with fuel gas discharged indoors or outdoors and monitored with a listed combustible gas detector, purging shall be stopped when fuel gas is detected. The 90-percent-by-volume criterion applies only to outdoor purging monitored with a combustible gas indicator under Section 406.7.1.3.

Sample 2 — Common Utility Processes & Procedures
Question: Combustion air for a furnace is being drawn from an attic area. The combustion air opening must be provided with a No. 26 gage galvanized steel sleeve extending from the appliance enclosure to at least what height above the top of the ceiling joists and insulation?
- A. 18 inches
- B. 4 inches
- C. 12 inches
- D. 6 inches
Correct Answer: D
NYC Fuel Gas Code Section 304.1.3 requires combustion air openings taken from an attic to be provided with a sleeve of not less than 0.019 inch (No. 26 Gage) galvanized steel or other approved material extending from the appliance enclosure to at least 6 inches above the top of the ceiling joists and insulation.

Sample 3 — Gas Work Safety
Question: When taking a branch line off a gas riser, the connection shall be made with not less than:
- A. A straight tee connection
- B. A one-elbow swing
- C. A two-elbow swing
- D. A three-elbow swing
Correct Answer: C
Per the NYC Fuel Gas Code, Section 404.5, branches shall be taken off the riser with not less than a two-elbow swing, which allows for expansion/contraction movement of the riser without straining the branch.
