3 questions

Sample 1 — Wiring Methods and Materials

Question: A 480V switchboard has exposed live parts front and rear. What is minimum working clearance required?

  • A. 3 ft
  • B. 4 ft
  • C. 5 ft
  • D. 6 ft

Correct Answer: B

Exposed live parts on both sides = Condition 3; Table 110.26(A)(1), 151–600V → 4 ft.

Reference: NEC 2023 Table 110.26(A)(1)

Sample 2 — Services and Service Equipment

Question: When calculating lighting loads for a retail occupancy, what is the minimum unit load in volt-amperes per square foot that must be used?

  • A. 2.2 volt-amperes per square foot
  • B. 1.5 volt-amperes per square foot
  • C. 1.3 volt-amperes per square foot
  • D. 1.9 volt-amperes per square foot

Correct Answer: D

Per NEC Table 220.42(A), the general lighting load for a retail occupancy is 20 VA/m² or 1.9 volt-amperes per square foot. This value is used to calculate the minimum lighting load for the branch circuits, feeders, and services.

Reference: NEC 2023 Table 220.42(A)

Sample 3 — Branch Circuits and Conductors

Question: What is the minimum copper service-entrance conductor size for a 200 A, 120/240-volt, single-phase service to a one-family dwelling, using THHN conductors with 75°C terminals?

  • A. 2/0 AWG
  • B. 3/0 AWG
  • C. 250 kcmil
  • D. 300 kcmil

Correct Answer: A

For a 120/240-volt, single-phase service supplying the entire load of a one-family dwelling, 310.12(A) (310.15(B)(7) in NEC 2017) permits service conductors with an ampacity of not less than 83 percent of the service rating: 200 A x 0.83 = 166 A. In the 75°C column of Table 310.16, 2/0 AWG copper is rated 175 A, so 2/0 AWG is the minimum. Without that dwelling allowance, 3/0 AWG copper (rated 200 A) would be required.
