Administration General Regulations
Key Concepts
Scope and definitions - The code applies to plumbing systems in this jurisdiction; the Section 101.2 Exception sends detached one- and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) not more than three stories high with separate means of egress, and their accessory structures, to the IRC. A townhouse exceeding three stories is regulated by the IPC. - Undefined terms: Section 201.3 points to the IBC, IFC, IFGC and IMC; Section 201.4 gives undefined terms their "ordinarily accepted meanings such as the context implies." - Section 202 definitions carry heavy weight. Memorize: Branch interval 8 ft or more developed length; Circuit vent serves two traps to a maximum of eight traps/trapped fixtures; Building drain extends 30 inches in developed length beyond exterior walls; Tempered water 85°F–110°F; Hot water ≥110°F; Backpressure, low head ≤4.33 psi (10-ft column); Lead-free solder and flux not more than 0.2-percent lead; Gravity grease interceptor not less than 500 gallons, retention not less than 30 minutes; Horizontal pipe less than 45 degrees with horizontal; Vertical pipe 45 degrees or more; Macerating toilet system water closet plus up to two other fixtures; Swimming pool depth of 2 feet or more at any point; Base flood elevation…
Plumbing Fixtures
Key Concepts
Fixture materials (Section 402) - Sheet copper for general applications shall conform to ASTM B 152 and shall weigh not less than 12 oz/ft² (402.3). - Sheet copper for flush tank linings shall conform to ASTM B 152 and weigh not less than 10 oz/ft² (425.3.3). - Sheet lead for pans shall weigh not less than 4 lb/ft² and be coated with asphalt paint or other approved coating (402.4).
Minimum facilities (Section 403) - Fractions from the Table 403.1 ratios are rounded up to the next whole number; for multiple occupancies, the fractions for each occupancy are first summed, then rounded up (403.1.1). - Family/assisted-use fixtures may count toward either sex only in assembly and mercantile occupancies (403.1.2). - Separate facilities per sex are required, except: dwelling/sleeping units; structures or tenant spaces with total occupant load (employees + customers) of 15 or fewer; mercantile occupancies with maximum occupant load of 100 or fewer (403.2). - Public toilet facilities not required where a quick-transaction structure/tenant space has a public access area ≤ 300 ft²; employee facilities are required in all occupancies (403.3). - Location: other than malls — not more than one story above or below, travel **not…
Water Supply and Distribution
Key Concepts
Water service and separation - Where water service piping shares a trench with the building sewer, the sewer must be of materials listed in Table 702.2; otherwise the two must be horizontally separated by not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) of undisturbed or compacted earth. The separation does not apply at a crossing provided the water service is sleeved to a point not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) horizontally from the sewer pipe centerline on both sides, using sleeve material listed in Table 605.3, 702.2 or 702.3 (Section 603.2). - Water service pipe installed underground and outside the structure must have a working pressure rating of not less than 160 psi at 73.4°F; where water pressure exceeds 160 psi, the rating must be not less than the highest available pressure (Section 605.3). - Hot water distribution pipe and tubing must have a pressure rating of not less than 100 psi at 180°F (Section 605.4).
Sanitary Drainage
2015 IPC — Chapter 7 Sanitary Drainage and Chapter 8 Indirect/Special Waste
Key Concepts
Materials & temperature (Ch. 7, Sec. 702–703) - Where waste water temperature will be greater than 140°F (60°C), the sanitary drainage piping material shall be rated for the highest temperature of the waste water — 702.5. - Drainage pipe on filled or unstable ground is limited to ABS plastic, cast iron, copper or copper-alloy tubing, or PVC plastic conforming to the standards in Table 702.3 — 703.2. Vitrified clay appears in Table 702.3 for building sewers generally but is not permitted in filled/unstable ground. - Chemical waste systems shall be completely separated from the sanitary drainage system and treated before discharge — 702.6, 803.1, 803.2.
Joints and fittings - Caulked hub-and-spigot joints: packed with oakum or hemp, molten lead poured in one operation to a depth of not less than 1 inch; lead shall not recede more than 1/8 inch below the hub rim — 705.4.1. - PVC solvent cement primer may be omitted only where the cement is third-party certified to ASTM D 2564 and used for PVC DWV in non-pressure applications in sizes up to and including 4 inches (102 mm) — **705.11.2…
Plumbing Vent Requirements
Key Concepts
Trap seal protection & chemical waste (901) - The vent system must permit admission or emission of air so that no fixture trap seal is subjected to a pressure differential of more than 1 inch of water column (249 Pa) — §901.2. - A chemical waste vent system must be independent of the sanitary vent system and terminate separately through the roof or to an air admittance valve complying with ASSE 1049, built of materials approved under §702.5 and tested for chemical resistance per ASTM F 1412 — §901.3.
Vent terminals (903) - Frost closure: where the 97.5-percent outside design temperature is 0°F (-18°C) or less, vent extensions through a roof or wall shall be not less than 3 inches in diameter, and any increase in vent size shall be made not less than 1 foot inside the thermal envelope — §903.2. - Location: an open vent terminal shall not be located directly beneath any door, openable window or other air intake opening of the building or an adjacent building, and shall not be within 10 feet horizontally of such an opening unless it is 3 feet or more above the top of such opening — §903.5.…
Traps, Interceptors, and Separators
Key Concepts
Scope (Section 1001.1). Chapter 10 governs the material and installation of traps, interceptors and separators.
Fixture traps (Section 1002.1). Each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap. The vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches, and the horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches, measured from the centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of the inlet of the trap. A fixture shall not be double trapped. Exceptions: fixtures with integral traps (Exc. 1); a combination plumbing fixture on one trap where one compartment is not more than 6 inches deeper than the other and the waste outlets are not more than 30 inches apart (Exc. 2); a grease interceptor serving as a fixture trap per manufacturer's instructions for a single fixture or a combination sink of not more than three compartments, where the vertical distance from fixture outlet to interceptor inlet does not exceed 30 inches and the developed length of waste pipe from the most upstream fixture outlet to the interceptor inlet does not exceed 60 inches (Exc. 3).
Storm Drainage
2015 IPC · Chapter 11
Key Concepts
Scope and general rules (Section 1101) - Rainwater from roofs and storm water from paved areas, yards, courts and courtyards shall drain to an approved place of disposal (1101.2). For one- and two-family dwellings, and where approved, storm water is permitted to discharge onto flat areas such as streets or lawns, provided it flows away from the building (1101.2). - Storm water shall not be drained into sewers intended for sewage only (1101.3). - The size of a drainage pipe shall not be reduced in the direction of flow (1101.5). - Roof design (1101.7): Roofs shall be designed for the maximum possible depth of water that will pond thereon, as determined by the relative levels of roof deck and overflow weirs, scuppers, edges or serviceable drains in combination with deflected structural elements. In determining that depth, all primary roof drainage means shall be assumed to be blocked. The depth shall include the height of water required above the inlet of the secondary drainage means to achieve the required flow rate for the design rainfall rate of Section 1106. - Cleanouts (1101.8): Cleanouts shall be installed in the storm drainage system and shall…
