Sample 1 — Metal Roofing, Flashing, Gutters and Downspouts

Question: You are designing a built-in gutter system for a commercial building. To ensure that any overflow spills over the front rather than into the building, what is the minimum elevation difference required between the front edge and the back edge of the gutter?

  • A. ¾ in.
  • B. ½ in.
  • C. 1½ in.
  • D. 1 in.

Correct Answer: D

Per the Architectural Sheet Metal Manual (Figure 1-4), the highest point on the front of a built-in gutter must be a minimum of 1 in. (25 mm) lower than the back edge of the gutter. This ensures that if the gutter overflows, water spills over the front edge rather than into the building.

Sample 2 — Concrete

Question: What chemical reaction occurs when cement is mixed with water, causing the concrete to harden?

  • A. Oxidation
  • B. Carbonation
  • C. Hydration
  • D. Dehydration

Correct Answer: C

Hydration is the chemical reaction that occurs when water combines with cement. This reaction generates heat and causes the concrete to harden. It is important to note that concrete does not 'dry out' — it hardens through this chemical process.

Sample 3 — Screened Enclosures and Awnings

Question: A patio cover must be designed to resist the minimum wind loads established by which provision of the residential code?

  • A. Section R311
  • B. Section R308
  • C. Section R506
  • D. Section R301.2.1

Correct Answer: D

IRC 2015 Section AH105.1 requires patio covers to be designed to resist the minimum wind loads set forth in Section R301.2.1. Section R506 governs concrete slabs-on-ground, R308 governs glazing, and R311 governs means of egress — all referenced elsewhere in Appendix H but not for wind loads.

Your first attempt is an inspection, not a final grade. The results page breaks your score down by outline topic, so you can see which areas need work. Compare it with the real exam's passing score, 21 correct answers out of 30 scored questions, and keep practicing until you pass consistently.

  • Answer what you know first and bookmark the rest. Our practice exams let you bookmark and come back.
  • Work your bookmarks on the second pass.
  • Keep your pace. The real exam works out to about 2 minutes 30 seconds per question.
  • After each attempt, look up each missed question's reference in your book and read the section.
