Study Tips

On an open-book exam, the winners aren't the smartest people in the room — they're the fastest at finding answers. Buy the required book, practice with it open, and tab and highlight each section the first time a question sends you there. Learn the index and table of contents until you can land on any topic in seconds. That speed is what separates a pass from a fail.

Know your way around each book's index and table of contents. Open-book exams reward speed: you need to find specific items quickly.

On an open-book exam, work through every question once: answer the ones you know and skip the ones you don't. Then go back to the ones you flagged. You can bookmark questions for later review, just like on our exams — and don't sink too much time into any single question. The clock is still running.

Give yourself at least three to six weeks. Use your exam's candidate bulletin as your roadmap for what's tested, and spend your time on finding-it-fast skills over rote memorization. In practice, aim for three clean passes at 80% or higher — setting your practice bar above the real cut score gives you a comfortable margin on test day.

Practicing against a ticking clock is the best way to beat exam-clock anxiety. Use these timed tests to build your pacing, so you learn to move steadily and never burn too long on a single question. By test day, the format feels routine.

This practice exam mirrors the real Pearson VUE exam — the same number of questions, drawn from the same topics. Practicing in that format now means no surprises when you sit for the real thing.

ICC F34 Journeyman Gas Pipe Fitter (2015 IFGC) Sample Questions

From our practice question bank, with answers and references:

Sample 1 — Combustion Air

Question: An enclosure contains gas appliances with a total input rating of 160,000 Btu/h. Outdoor combustion air is supplied by two permanent openings — one within 12 inches of the top and one within 12 inches of the bottom — each communicating with the outdoors through a horizontal duct. What is the minimum free area of each opening?

  • A. 40 square inches
  • B. 80 square inches
  • C. 160 square inches
  • D. 53 square inches

Correct Answer: B

IFGC Section 304.6.1 requires 1 square inch per 2,000 Btu/h for each opening where communication with the outdoors is through horizontal ducts: 160,000 ÷ 2,000 = 80 square inches each. The 1 square inch per 4,000 Btu/h figure applies only to direct outdoor openings or vertical ducts; 1 square inch per 3,000 Btu/h applies to the one-permanent-opening method of Section 304.6.2.

Sample 2 — Fuel Supply System Sizing

Question: The fuel gas code's piping provisions govern piping systems extending between which two points?

  • A. From the point of delivery to the appliance connections
  • B. From the street main to the gas meter
  • C. From the meter outlet to each appliance shutoff valve
  • D. From the service regulator to the building shutoff

Correct Answer: A

Per IFGC Section 401.1, the applicability of the code to piping systems extends from the point of delivery to the connections with the appliances, including design, materials, fabrication, installation, testing and maintenance.

Reference: IFGC 2015 Section 401.1

Sample 3 — General Requirements

Question: A new gas piping system in a commercial building has a calculated internal pipe volume of 1,200 cubic feet. What is the minimum required duration of the pressure test?

  • A. 30 minutes
  • B. 2 hours
  • C. 1 1/2 hours
  • D. 1 hour

Correct Answer: C

Per IFGC 2015 Section 406.4.2, test duration shall be not less than 1/2 hour for each 500 cubic feet of pipe volume or fraction thereof. 1,200 cubic feet ÷ 500 = 2.4; since any fraction of 500 cubic feet counts as a full increment, this rounds up to 3 increments. 3 × 1/2 hour = 1 1/2 hours minimum test duration.

Reference: IFGC 2015 Section 406.4.2

Sample 4 — Appliances and Equipment

Question: A household gas range is installed beneath a combustible cabinet. A metal ventilating hood constructed of sheet metal 0.0122 inch thick, as wide as the appliance and centered over it, is installed with 1/4 inch of clearance between the hood and the underside of the cabinet. What is the minimum permitted vertical clearance from the cooking top to the combustible material above?

  • A. 18 inches
  • B. 36 inches
  • C. 24 inches
  • D. 30 inches

Correct Answer: C

Per 2015 IFGC Section 623.7, household cooking appliances require not less than 30 inches vertical clearance above the cooking top to combustible material and metal cabinets; 24 inches is permitted where one of the listed protections is installed, including a metal ventilating hood of not less than 0.0122-inch sheet metal with at least 1/4-inch clearance to the combustible material, at least as wide as and centered over the appliance.
