Sample 1 — General Requirements

Question: A master fuel gas contractor sits on the jurisdiction's board of appeals. At an upcoming hearing one regular member must be disqualified because of a financial interest in the project. How many alternate members is the chief appointing authority required to appoint, and for what term?

  • A. One alternate, serving a 3-year term
  • B. Two alternates, serving 5-year terms
  • C. Two alternates, serving 3-year terms
  • D. One alternate, serving a 5-year term

Correct Answer: B

Alternates must possess the qualifications required for board membership and are appointed for 5 years, or until a successor has been appointed. (Section 109.2.4 is the provision requiring a member with a personal, professional or financial interest not to hear the appeal.)

  • B. ANSI Z21.50
  • C. ANSI Z21.88
  • D. ANSI Z21.84

ANSI Z21.50 applies to vented gas fireplaces (Section 604.1), ANSI Z21.60 to decorative appliances for installation in solid fuel-burning fireplaces, and ANSI Z21.84 to manually lighted natural gas decorative appliances (Section 602.1).

Sample 3 — Chimneys and Vents

Question: Rather than using the vent sizing tables, you elect to use the alternative area method to size a chimney venting system serving two draft-hood-equipped appliances. Under that method, the effective area of the chimney flue must be:

  • A. Not less than the sum of both draft hood outlet areas
  • B. Not less than twice the smaller draft hood outlet area
  • C. Not less than the larger outlet area plus 25 percent of the smaller
  • D. Not less than the larger outlet area plus 50 percent of the smaller

Correct Answer: D

Per IFGC 2015, Section 503.5.5, Item 3, for a chimney venting system connected to two appliances with draft hoods, the effective area of the chimney flue shall be not less than the area of the larger draft hood outlet plus 50 percent of the area of the smaller draft hood outlet, and not greater than seven times the smallest draft hood outlet area.
